Cocco
Cocco is a Japanese singer who writes music to express her emotions. Her style ranges from grungey rock to children's songs--whatever best represents what she's feeling.
Early in her career, Cocco gained attention for her dark music and lyrics, as well as her eccentric personality. Her song "SING A SONG~NO MUSIC, NO LIFE~" became a campaign theme for Tower Records in Japan (and the slogan "No Music, No Life" is still used sometimes). Her dreamlike number "Tsuyoku Hakanai Monotachi" was a hit, and her third album "Rapunzel" hit #1 on the Oricon music chart.
Cocco's distaste for the music industry led to her retirement in 2001, after four albums. She wrote her first children's book, "Minami no Shima no Hoshi no Suna," in 2002, and a follow-up, "Minami no Shima no Koi no Uta," in 2004. However, she also resumed her musical activities in 2003, starting with a concert to make people pick up trash in Okinawan beaches. Several small releases followed, including a single available to purchasers of her second children's book, and a collaborative art and music project called "The Bird." One of these activities in particular, a self-cover of "SING A SONG" with Kishida Shigeru of Quruli, led to SINGER SONGER, a folksy pop band that released an album in 2005. Cocco's single "Onsoku PUNCH," released in February of 2006, is her first commercial solo release since 2001 and incorporates a techno beat.
